North Coast

 

Napa chef builds opportunity through food

 

Former chemistry teacher Cinthya Cisneros turned her love of experimentation into La Cheve. The restaurant draws crowds for Mexican-inspired dishes and drinks including chilaquiles, chile verde Benedict, guava-filled conchas and mimosa flights. Its sister restaurant, Con Amor opened in 2025. The once undocumented Cisneros now employs more than 50 locals and has established four American Dream scholarships, including two for undocumented students.

 

Ukiah keeps a family tradition alive

 

Family-owned since 1969, El Azteca Mexican Restaurant is a longtime Ukiah staple serving authentic Mexican dishes alongside California-inspired creations such as tortilla-based pizza. The restaurant offers indoor and outdoor dining, wine, beer and a full bar seven days a week. 

 

Mexican heritage shapes Mi Sueño Winery

 

Mexican immigrant Rolando Herrera began his Napa Valley career as a dishwasher in 1982 before moving into winemaking and founding Mi Sueño Winery with his wife, Lorena, in 1997. The family produces estate-grown, small-lot wines from vineyards across Napa Valley and Sonoma County, combining Mexican heritage with generations of vineyard experience.

Santa Rosa’s Mitote Food Park celebrates Mexican flavors

 

Santa Rosa's Roseland neighborhood showcases regional Mexican cuisine at Mitote Food Park, a gathering place for local, family-run food businesses. Visitors can sample Oaxacan tlayudas, Yucatecan cochinita pibil, Jaliscan birria, Michoacán-style carnitas and Mexico City-inspired tacos in one stop. Named for the Nahuatl word for a festive gathering, Mitote also hosts cultural events and celebrations that reflect the neighborhood's community spirit.

 

Follow Santa Clara's Mexican food trail

 

Santa Clara's Mexican Food Trail spans styles ranging from Puesto's elevated Mexico City-inspired cooking and Lupita's Taqueria's home-style dishes to Iguanas Burritozilla's signature 18-inch, five-pound burrito. Pedro's Restaurant and Cantina add decades of local history, with roots dating to its first Los Gatos location in 1972 and Santa Clara expansion in 1980.

 

Elena's brings family cooking to San Francisco

 

From the family behind Original Joe's, Elena's pairs Mexican American traditions with California ingredients and an emphasis on warm, family-style hospitality. House-made tamales, street-style tacos and fresh seafood share the menu with handcrafted margaritas.

Sonora serves Mexican flavor with history

 

Tuolumne County traces its Cinco de Mayo history to an 1862 celebration in Columbia, commemorated today with folk dancing, mariachi music, crafts, food and a street dance. Mexican heritage continues year-round at Sonora's El Arroyo, where traditional flavors meet modern dishes, vegan and health-conscious choices, cocktails and desserts such as Sweet Chimichangos and Sweet Nachos. Creekside outdoor seating adds to the restaurant's historic downtown setting.

 

Elk Grove finds flavor at La Fiesta Meat Market & Deli

 

La Fiesta Meat Market & Deli has served Elk Grove since 2017, building on a family business that dates to 1993. Part carniceria and part deli, the neighborhood market specializes in fresh-cut meats and Mexican comfort foods including quesabirrias, menudo, pozole, beef pocket empanadas and street tacos. Family packs and catering make it practical for gatherings as it is for a casual meal.

Central Valley

 

Generations of Mexican cooking endure in Butte County

 

Casa Lupe has served Gridley since 1971 with fresh daily tortillas, weekend carnitas and an on-site market, deli and bakery stocked with Mexican pastries and specialties. In Chico, La Hacienda has operated continuously since 1948, making it the city's oldest Mexican restaurant. Its menu combines longtime family recipes with more contemporary creations.

Fairfield's Mexican dining scene ranges from Mamá Por Dios, which pairs gourmet dishes with Mexican art, color and atmosphere, to downtown's Casa Agave, known for traditional cuisine, cocktails, local wine, beer and karaoke. Buellton's La Tequila Restaurant brings another dimension to a food scene often associated with wine country and Santa Maria-style barbecue. The family-run restaurant makes mole, salsa and corn tortillas from scratch using recipes and cooking methods rooted in Mexican tradition

 

Paso Robles goes beyond wine country

 

Los Robles Café draws diners with award-winning al pastor tacos, Habaneros focuses on family-friendly Mexican fare and Finca serves Baja- and Sonora-inspired dishes including wood-grilled seafood and carne asada from a historic farmhouse. Condesa channels Mexico City in San Luis Obispo

 

Condesa brings the nightlife energy of Mexico City's La Condesa neighborhood to San Luis Obispo with an agave-focused cocktail program and Mexican-inspired bar food. Located beside boutique hotel Petit Soleil, the restaurant serves mariscos, tacos, tostadas and dishes such as Aguachile de Camarón, Enchiladas Suizas and Elote de Costilla. Open nightly, Condesa also serves weekend brunch with chilaquiles, huevos rancheros and other Mexican favorites.

 

Santa Maria's Taco Trail tells family stories

 

The Santa Maria Valley Taco Trail connects 19 taquerias and Mexican restaurants that reflect the region's deep Latino food culture. Stops include family-run El Pueblito, open since 1997, more than 50-year-old Maya Mexican Restaurant, Casa Mañana, food truck-turned-restaurant Nena's Kitchen and Tortilleria México, which now operates three locations with tortillas made throughout the day.

 

Morro Bay serves sabor beyond the waterfront

 

Morro Bay's Mexican food scene stretches beyond its seafood reputation, supported in part by local avocado farms. El Sabor De Guerrero, Taqueria El Guero Distillery, waterfront La Katrina Authentic Mexican Cocina, Mi Casa Restaurante Mexicano and Chapala Mexican Grill offer a mix of neighborhood taqueria fare and sit-down dining.

Los Angeles tells its story through historic food institutions

 

Los Angeles' Latino culinary heritage spans historic Olvera Street, Mercado La Paloma and longtime institutions such as King Taco and Oaxacan favorite Guelaguetza. Mercado La Paloma includes Michelin-starred Mexican seafood restaurant Holbox and Yucatán specialist Chichen Itza, while San Damián represents the city's contemporary chef-driven Mexican dining scene. Grand Central Market adds another cross-section of Latino food culture, including Villa's Tacos, bringing historic traditions and newer voices together across the city.

 

CARNE fires up Oxnard dining

 

Newcomer CARNE brings Latin-inspired live-fire cooking to The Collection at RiverPark in Oxnard, with steaks including Churrasco, Picanha and Australian Wagyu Tomahawk alongside Bone Marrow Tacos, Spanish Octopus and Whole Branzino. Latin cocktails and a tableside Mojito Cart add to the dinner experience. Weekend brunch shifts to Horchata French Toast, chilaquiles, Steak & Eggs, Lobster Tacos and specialty cocktails.

 

Fuego refreshes Long Beach's Latin flavors

 

Fuego has evolved into a Latin-inspired waterfront lounge with refreshed indoor and outdoor spaces, fire pits, handcrafted cocktails and shareable dishes. Hispanic Heritage Month offerings include specialty drinks alongside Wild Mushroom and Oaxaca Cheese Sopes and Chicken Tinga Tostadas. During Long Beach Latino Restaurant Week, Oct. 5-11, a special menu adds dishes such as Chamorro de res, Creamy Poblano Rigatoni Mezze and Calabaza en Techa.

Orange County

 

Costa Mesa’s giant Mexican marketplace

 

Mercado González brings more than 20 food stalls into 70,000 sq. ft. Mexican marketplace and food hall created by the family behind Northgate González Market. Inspired by traditional Mexican mercados, the destination combines regional dishes, fresh tortillas, baked goods, produce, specialty ingredients, art and live entertainment. Offerings range from tacos, tamales and carnitas to aguas frescas and churros from Churrería El Moro's first U.S. location.

 

Huntington Beach packs tacos near the sand

 

Downtown Huntington Beach has nine Mexican restaurants within its one-mile footprint, ranging from viral taquerias to longtime neighborhood favorites. Primecut Taqueria and Tacos Los Cholos specialize in mesquite-grilled meats, Bear Flag Fish Co. draws crowds for fish tacos and Fiesta Grill and Pete's Mexican Food offer unfussy local favorites. Sandbar Cocina y Tequila and Fred's Mexican Cafe round out the scene with full menus and generous portions near the beach.

 

Garden Grove preserves Guerrero cooking at Sabroso! Mexican Kitchen

 

Sabroso! Mexican Kitchen grew from Chef Tito Muñoz's dream of opening a restaurant after losing his job, with his children pooling their savings to help launch the family business. Many dishes come from recipes his mother learned from his grandmother in Guerrero, Mexico, including handmade tortillas, tamales and signature chamorro in smoky guajillo sauce.

 

Santa Ana’s Spicy Michelada Guide

 

Santa Ana's Michelada Guide introduces visitors to the city's Latino food and drink culture through restaurants, bars and markets across the community. Stops range from traditional micheladas made with house sauces, chiles and spices to creative versions and non-alcoholic drinks. 

 

Buena Park blends Cuban and Mexican traditions

 

Family-owned Porto's has served Cuban recipes since 1963, including potato balls, empanadas, guava and cheese pastelitos and Cuban sandwiches. Tacos Maggie specializes in Tijuana-style tacos, burritos, tortas and mulitas with meats including al pastor, suadero and carne asada, earning recognition in the 2025 Taste of Buena Park Food Awards.

Inland Empire

 

Big Bear brings Mexican flavor to the mountains

 

Big Bear's Latino culture is reflected in community traditions, lowrider gatherings and a varied Mexican restaurant scene. Rosa's pairs elevated Mexican dishes with ceviche, mariscos and cocktails, while Laguna Grill offers scratch-made classics, tableside guacamole and molcajetes with lake views. Muchachos Urban Cantina adds modern Mexican flavors and craft margaritas while family-owned Tacostao focuses on street-style tacos, birria, tortas and burritos.

Deserts

 

Greater Palm Springs honors Mexican restaurant traditions

 

Jalisco, opened in 1971, was Coachella's first Mexican restaurant and remains family-owned, while La Bonita's is a low-key Palm Springs favorite. Award-winning Las Casuelas Nuevas rounds out the group as a longtime regional institution, reflecting the area's multigenerational Mexican culinary heritage.

San Diego County

 

Oceanside takes Mexican cooking from casual to Michelin-starred

 

Chef Roberto Alcocer's Valle, the Oceanside’s first restaurant to earn a Michelin Star, draws inspiration from Baja California's Guadalupe Valley for its modern Mexican menu and wine program. San Luis Rey Bakery & Restaurant has served scratch-made pan dulce and hearty dishes for more than five decades while family-owned Plantology offers drinks such as the De La Olla with cinnamon and piloncillo.

 

Carlsbad mixes longtime favorites with modern Mexican cooking

 

Carlsbad's Mexican dining scene includes family businesses with decades of history alongside restaurants offering newer interpretations. Lola's 7 Up Market & Deli is a local institution, Norte Mexican has served the community for 40 years and family-owned Garcia's Mexican has operated for more than six decades. NOMADA draws on Sinaloan traditions while Fresco Cucina brings a modern approach to Mexican cuisine.
