“California’s mountain destinations are ready to welcome visitors,” said Caroline Beteta, president & CEO of Visit California. “I am deeply grateful for the partnership with Secretary Omishakin and the dedicated teams at Caltrans and CHP who are committed to helping travelers enjoy the abundance of California’s snow experiences.”
Secretary Toks Omishakin of the California State Transportation Agency stressed that partnering with resorts is essential to effectively manage and overcome winter transportation challenges.
“Our teams work around the clock to keep California moving during winter weather,” Omishakin said. “Every storm brings its own challenges, but our goal stays the same: Keep roads open as much as possible, keep drivers informed and keep people safe. It’s the convergence of clear communication and strong coordination that makes a successful winter season.”
Key takeaways from the 2025 Snow Summit
- Increased snowmaking: Ski resorts across California are capitalizing on below-freezing temperatures to operate snowmaking systems to build a reliable base layer and open more trails.
- Tips on getting to Big Bear: With Highway 38 closed indefinitely, Big Bear Mountain Resort has prepared planning resources to help drivers navigate alternative routes to the alpine destination. As always, travelers are encouraged to check road conditions before departing.
- Commitment to communication: State agencies and ski industry leaders reaffirmed their commitment to timely public communication. Resources like Caltrans’ QuickMap website and regional CHP social media accounts provide real-time updates on road conditions, closures and chain requirements.
California Highway Patrol Commissioner Sean Duryee emphasized how critical driver preparedness is to winter safety and keeping roads open.
“As Californians head to the mountains, preparedness becomes one of the most important aspects of winter safety,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. “The CHP will have an increased presence during peak ski-traffic times to encourage responsible driving and respond quickly when conditions worsen. We encourage drivers to stay alert, adapt to changing conditions and be prepared with chains and emergency supplies for anything winter weather may bring.”
Caltrans Director Dina El-Tawansy underscored the agency’s operational readiness.
“The safety of the traveling public remains Caltrans’ top priority, and we’re prepared to help all travelers stay safe during ever-changing and unpredictable winter travel,” said Caltrans Director Dina El-Tawansy. “Our crews stand ready to keep highways open and passable whenever possible for Californians and visitors headed to our mountain communities to enjoy the snow and support local economies. We urge travelers to drive safely and remain mindful of maintenance crews, chain installers, and other emergency personnel working to keep everyone safe.”
Industry outlook
Despite below-average snowfall projections, the ski industry remains optimistic. Early season variability is normal, with February and March typically California’s snowiest months.
“While snowfall may be lighter this season so far, our resorts are ready with expanded snowmaking capabilities to elevate the guest experience,” Ski California President & CEO John Rice said. “California’s mountains remain a spectacular destination, whether you’re carving fresh powder or enjoying alternative winter adventures.”
