California’s Best Breweries to Celebrate International Beer Day

Across the world, enjoying a pint of beer with friends and family has become a favorite pastime for many, and the Golden State has nearly endless options! In honor of International Beer Day on Aug. 5, here are some of California’s best breweries, including female-led operations worth exploring.

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA

Local Lager Specialist in San Francisco

Local Brewing, a brewery and beer bar in San Francisco, crafts small batches of locally made, handcrafted beer. Regan Long, a lager specialist, started the destination brewery with Sarah Fenson. The brewery creates interesting and approachable beers – all brewed on-site. With more than a dozen rotating beers on tap and hot sandwiches, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

Female Brewers Strike Gold

The Gold Country region may be named for its valuable mineral, but it is also home to over 50 craft breweries, among which many are women-led. Visit Rachel Sabatine’s Around the Horn Brewery, a Gold Rush-themed brewery near Yosemite, or BarmHaus Brewing, a small independent European-style brewer in Garden Valley. Placerville’s Gold Hill Vineyard & Brewery produces classic beer in traditional style, including a Scotch Ale, a Dry Irish Stout and an IPA. There’s also Fort Rock Brewing in Rancho Cordova which was started by Heidi Wilder and a group of friends who turned their passion for great beer into a successful business.

Redding's Beer Scene

In downtown Redding, locals have turned their passion for homebrewing into a vibrant craft beer scene. Visit Ale House Pub, the oldest standing brew pub in Redding, or Fall River Breweries Co.'s award-winning Sherbet Drip beer. Pay homage at Carnegie’s restaurant, one of the first places to introduce craft beer to consumers. Visit Mt Shasta Brewing Company, a family-owned microbrewery located in the old Medo-Bel Creamery building, and is known for its high-quality ales and lagers.

Brewing 'Con Cultura' in Salinas

Woman-owned and operated Brew-N-Krew Ale House in Salinas pours creative brews ‘con orgullo.’ Inspired by her Mexican American upbringing, owner Marlene Garcia infuses unique flavors into her craft beer, borrowing flavors from the Mexican candy of her childhood. Similarly, La Cantina Brewing Company’s inventive tap selection includes the horchata-flavored stout and tamarind-infused pilsner.

Crooked Lane Brewing Company’s Female Brewmaster

Teresa Psuty is the head brewmaster and co-owner of the award-winning Crooked Lane Brewing Company in Auburn. With over 20 rotating taps serving everything from lager to doppelbock with plenty of IPAs in between, Teresa brews a beer for every taste. Make sure to try their award-winning Belgian Blonde Ale!

Rewind at Tahoe Tap Haus in Lake Tahoe

For the past two decades, Melissa Sig has owned and operated Tahoe Tap Haus in North Lake Tahoe. With 16 local beers on tap, Sig showcases a rotating list of local beers. At the adjacent Art Haus, a remodeled movie theater that she also owns, there are nine taps available among other offerings.

What’s on Tap at Naughty Oak Brewery

Stop by Naughty Oak Brewery in Orcutt for a fun, relaxed vibe filled with locals who’ll make you feel at home. The brewery is known for its award-winning, flagship Jacaranda IPA, with several selections available across California bars, restaurants and more.

Mujeres Brew Club: For Women Who Love Beer

Mujeres Brew Club is San Diego’s premiere brew club that aims to expose women to the rich flavors, history and culture of craft beer. It plans to use beers produced by club members and Border X Brewing, the all-female-run and Latina-owned brewhouse that has reimagined the stereotypical gender and race of the craft beer industry.

Orange County Breweries and Beer Trails

Santa Ana natives, Pete and Tony Adame and Jason “J-Bird” Venable own and operate Cerveza Cito Brewery. They specialize in Latin-inspired beers, whose ingredients — prickly pear fruit, Ibarra Mexican chocolate and ghost pepper spice, among others — reflect Santa Ana’s and Venable’s heritage. The Bruery in Orange County packs a punch with beers inspired by the culinary world, traditional beer styles, natural ingredients, vineyards and even junk food. In Anaheim, the La Palma Beer Trail is a five-mile strip that’s home to more than half of the city’s breweries such as Bottle Logic Brewing, Brewery X, All-American Brew Works and Asylum Brewing, among several others.
